Here it is, another wet and grey April day. Just yesterday we celebrated the arrival of spring by opening the doors of the shed and pulling out bikes and charcoal grills. Today, it is raining and cold. Spring and warmth and growth and an easy life doesn’t come at us all at once, but it little teases. That’s what we have to expect in the middle of a large continent.

Not at Any Price
There are many reasons why banking should be boring. The most important reasons can be complicated, such as the simple fact that fancy new financial instruments actually increase instability in the entire system, or very simple, such as the need for a certain level of democracy and thus understanding in basic financial systems. But there’s one more reason that banks need to stick with the boring process of borrowing or accepting deposits at one rate and loaning at another, making money on the “spread” between them: they don’t know how to do anything else.
Winning Through Acting Crazy
Many years ago, I spent an insomniac’s childhood watching teevee late at night. Being a bit awkward and easily embarrassed, this was my connection to common culture. I learned a lot from Big Wilson and his all-night all-stars, but I also had a chance to catch some of the experimental stuff that was consigned to the late hours of a medium at the height of its power.

It’s Tuesday, the day I answer my mail. Sadly, I haven’t gotten as much of it as I’d like lately (what, do you all have Spring fever or have I been tedious?). Between that and being rather bizzy I’ll keep it short.

There’s no category in the book world hotter than Teen / Young Adult. Publishers are constantly rushing out titles and bookstores are still expanding the shelf space allotted to them. Part of the allure is that this is a new offering and the audience is expanding. A closer look tells us that this isn’t really all that new for many reasons.
