The real truth about our world is all around us. In these industrial-age times there are people that measure, tabulate, and report all kinds of different things. There are two problems with this.

The first problem is that you have to ask how people made their calculations. If they have an axe to grind, you can be sure that they like the way that reinforces the opinions they already had. Orwell told us most of what we need to know here.

Elected Attorney General

The controversy with Attorney General Alberto Gonzales boils down to the supposed wall that exists between the AG and the President. The independence of the former has been a sore spot for Congress since Watergate. Sen. Arlen Specter has pointed out several times that safeguards were in place which were removed when Gonzales, a close friend of Bush, became AG after Ashcroft resigned.

This is just nonsense.

Car Free

I’ve been leading a car-free life lately. With only one in the family, my partner takes it most of the time to hit her job in suburban lands. That leaves me with the bus.

The main advantage of a bus is that even the shortest trip becomes a small adventure. Yesterday, a man chatted with everyone and no one, telling us all how beautiful everything and everybody was. He was obviously mentally challenged, in the sense that people aren’t supposed to be that happy. It was a small joy to witness.

Cold Front

As soon as I walked outside, I felt it. The silky warm haze of summer that was wrapped around us unexpectedly fell to reveal a sharp and biting cold. The air was alive and eager for some kind of action. It is spring, once again, in the middle of a large continent. Anything can happen.
