Cold

The cold this week is brutal. The temperature has been around 0F (-20C) for several days, and we have a few more to go.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s just an hiccup in the Jet Stream that points a small piece of it straight down from the North Pole, a 100 mile per hour artic express aimed right at Minnesota. It’s nothing unusual, and it happens frequently at this time of year.

Spencer House

This year we celebrate 150 years of the Spencer House, the home I share with my partner in life, my kids and far too many animals in the West End of Saint Paul. It is one of the oldest houses in our city and listed on the National Register of Historic places.

One of the hottest trends in publishing right now is the continued expansion of the genre “Teen / Young Adult”, a category my book “Downriver” belongs in. Literature dealing with the difficulties faced growing up and having to make sense of an often senseless world teaches many great lessons and eases the burden placed on kids. There is also one teevee show that can stand with the best of this budding genre.
