No Safe Harbor
Today’s blog entry has a distinct lack of fun. Sorry ’bout that. But this has to be said.
On Friday, the stock market reacted to news that Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, the nation’s top mortgage lenders, were on the verge of bankruptcy. Fannie Mae dropped 22% in one day, capping off a loss of 84% over the last year, as a real panic ensued.
Housing Bubble, Toil and Trouble
The other day I got into an argument in some distant corner of the internet. That’s not exactly news – it happens far too often in my life. But this particular argument, setting aside how it got personal, was rather important to me.
500 Year Floodplain
The great bubble of water that mushroomed out of the banks of the Iowa River has moved on into the Mississippi, causing even more devastation as it moves south. Farms and towns have been flooded, roads have been closed, and barge traffic has ceased. Can’t something be done to prevent this, if not stop it?
In a word, “No”.
