I never wanted to tell the world my opinion of Britney Spears. Far too many people have written about her in a way that clearly violates the basic privacy that decency demands. Her recent brief committal as a ward of the State of California changes that to at least some extent.

All about the standing-upright chimps that really love to talk about themselves.
Cold
The cold this week is brutal. The temperature has been around 0F (-20C) for several days, and we have a few more to go.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s just an hiccup in the Jet Stream that points a small piece of it straight down from the North Pole, a 100 mile per hour artic express aimed right at Minnesota. It’s nothing unusual, and it happens frequently at this time of year.

Cold and Warm
The morning starts with darkness all around us, a cold and unfriendly darkness that makes the warm dreamworld of bed hard to leave behind. There is no indication that we have to get up other than the clock. Nature tells us to snuggle down like bunnies under the porch, but the electromechanical whirl of time says we must get up. It must be obeyed.
Riot
Pakistan and Kenya are burning. The war in Colombia continues to simmer. Political violence is simply another tactic in some systems around the world.
Here in the USofA we don’t have that problem, at least right now. We have had our spasms of violence from time to time, but they have generally been confined locally. I had a chance to see the McDuffie Riot of 1980 in operation, an event that was sparked by the police killing of a man who made two mistakes: sassing back to the cops and being black.
