Glory and Promise

The winter clouds hung low over West Seventh Street as I walked down it today. Thick and bubbly, they cast a shadow of ice and cold yet to come which made me want to seek comfort in the Mad Hatter Café as quickly as I could get there. Before I could sprint inside, a new moment arrived, a glimmer of hope in the form of a thin ray of sun between the clouds. It was a “glory”, a ray of inspiration that only lasted a moment.

“The Holidays”, that generic term designed to offend no one, are upon us. There are so many things that come in the big package that defines December it’s hard to know where to start. Most people just dive in and get into the spirit of it all. Not me. I like to find amusement in watching everyone else run around. Snowstorm

It came as expected, with all the usual omens. The driving wind out of the east picked up right on schedule with a chill that ran under the skin and deep into the bones and finally forcing its way into the subconscious. This wasn’t an ordinary storm. It was the first big storm of the winter season. We spent six months unpreparing for this.

Progress

I first saw the idea articulated clearly by the great philosopher of our time, Scott Adams of “Dilbert” fame. The simple observation is that evolution works slowly, and the human brain has not changed significantly since we first stood erect on the grasslands of Africa. The amount of information this brain is expected to retain and process continues to increase exponentially. As a result, all of us go in and out of competence on a nearly constant basis.
