The upheaval in financial markets has left many Americans stunned. How could this have happened? Even worse, how could this have happened with so few people giving us any kind of warning that it was possible? I certainly did my best to tell everyone, but in the end there’s only so much anyone can do. Now I’d like to explain why I think this happened and why the Five Crises are so tightly related – and what we can guess this will mean in an election year.

RNC Ends, not a Moment Too Soon
The Republican Convention is over. We can all come out from our bunkers and claim back our city, Saint Paul. But what did all the smoke and noise mean? I’ll break it down into parts.

The walls around the Republican Convention were not enough. As protesters flooded the streets, police had to form walls of warm human bodies behind shields, movable walls designed to keep the damage confined and the culprits identifiable.
The RNC Wall
I awoke one morning to find that I had been put into a prison. It was not that I had been placed there, rather one had been built around me. I went on my morning walk to inquire what my crime had been, and encountered a policeman in clean, sharp uniform. I was told that there was no crime, but that necessary precautions were taken and a lengthy speech about the importance of civil liberties. The words were enough to take my mind off of the prison for a while. When I read that out side of our walls raids had taken place in which people were handcuffed for “Intent to cause a riot”, and then released. One of those detained was four years old. I wonder if they had the same chat about civil liberties that we have inside the walls.
