I finished my taxes, barely on time. The last minute rush to get them in is a feature of life in the USofA; even if you got yours done early, you hear a lot of carping from the many procrastinators around you.

It’s Tuesday, the day I answer my mail. Sadly, I haven’t gotten as much of it as I’d like lately (what, do you all have Spring fever or have I been tedious?). Between that and being rather bizzy I’ll keep it short.

The US election hasn’t been as heated over the last week, so perhaps it’s time to take a deep, cleansing breath. Inhale, hold it – exhale – good. We can all step back from the heat of the moment to think about what’s going on for a while.

The United States of America is, by far, the most influential nation on earth. Its economy is the largest of any single nation, just behind the European Union as a whole at 27% of the entire world GDP. Its influence is even more gargantuan when measured by total military expenditures, which in 2008 are $711 Billion or 48% of the worldwide total:

Because of the color of Barack Obama’s skin, race will play a role in this election that will be more intense than any previous one. However, the voters who will decide the election will invariably perceive the media frenzy in very different ways. This will happen because race itself is only as important as people think it is. Our perception of race is a strong function of the world that we grew up in.
